Dora Pomeroy’s Friendship Quilt

This is a detail from Dora Pomeroy’s (Sophia Isadora Morris) friendship quilt. She lived from 1873-1953, but I don’t know when the quilt was created.  A good textile detective might be able to date it based on the fabric and stitches.  It has always been my understanding it was sewn in the early part of the 20th century.

I recently archived this quilt to help preserve it, but before doing so I photographed each square.  The squares are approximately 12 inches, and are varied in their workmanship and style, but the high definition photography shows an incredible variety of stitches and unique attributes for each square, such as initials, symbols, or embellishments.

Dora was my great-grandmother, and this quilt was passed down to her oldest son (my grandfather), and to his only daughter (my mother).  I would like to share photos of it with all of Dora’s descendants if they contact me.

The quilt colors are remarkably vibrant after 100 years.  It had been hanging in my parents’ home for at least 30 years under plexiglass of some kind, which must have had UV filtering properties.  Under the glass it appeared to be faded, but when the glass was removed recently the colors were as vivid as the day it was framed, much to our joy and relief.

Stories added to “On Granny’s Trail”

I have added an area called “stories“, which will be a place for biographies, autobiographies, letters, and any other interesting personal records.  The first group of records added are biographical sketches for Francis Martin Pomeroy,  Hyrum Bowles Morris, Franklin Thomas Pomeroy, and Sarah Matilda Colborn Pomeroy; also included are some letters from Sophia Isadora “Dora” Morris Pomeroy to sons Karl Pomeroy and Ivan Pomeroy, some memories of Kathleen and Allen Lee Gooch, and two brief autobiographies written by Ivan Pomeroy.

Wedding photo for Franklin T. Pomeroy and Sophia Isadora Morris

Franklin Thomas Pomeroy and Sophia Isadora (Dora) Morris were married on 28 Mar 1893 in Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona.  They traveled to Logan, Cache County, Utah to be “sealed” in the Logan Temple on 19 Apr 1893.  (Dora’s obituary says they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple, but their marriage certificate and temple records verify the Mesa wedding and Logan sealing.)

This photograph was taken by C.R. Savage of Salt Lake City, Utah.  I have posted a scan of the original (sepia) and a black and white edited version with enhanced contrast, and without the “C.R. Savage, Salt Lake City” at the bottom.

Franklin T. Pomeroy and Sophia Isadora Morris marriage license, 23 Mar 1893

This is the license portion of a marriage license/certificate document that measures 16″ x 10.5″.  The license comprises the top half of the document and the marriage certificate comprises the bottom half.  (See previous posts)  The document was originally folded in three places, and on the back side of the license and certificate is the information identifying the contracting parties, witnesses, officiator, and filing information. The only fold line that is still intact is the one in the middle, whereas at the other two the document has become detached.  It features a seal from the Probate Court of Maricopa County, Territory of Arizona.  These are scans of the original document in possession of Dayna Jacobs.
